What’s the Difference Between a Handout and a Hand Up?

What’s the Difference Between a Handout and a Hand Up?

At Matthew’s Hope, we are in a fight against homelessness. We love our guests, extending hope to a population more familiar with hate and hopelessness. So we provide showers, haircuts, laundry service, medical assistance, and canned vegetables to every person who comes. We visit the homeless camps out in the woods to invite people to join us, and for these basic necessities, we expect nothing in return.

But because we value the dignity of each person, we understand that “getting something for nothing” can actually be discouraging. That is why we challenge our guests to make a commitment to us by working at Matthew’s Hope in our pantry, our garden or onsite, in exchange for additional services and assistance.
