Isn’t Every Homeless Person Just a Drunk in the Woods?

We have served:

  • a rocket scientist who suffered a nervous breakdown

  • a mother abandoned to care for her two teenaged sons without enough income to feed or house them

  • a construction worker who grieved the death of his sister by abusing alcohol and could not regain control

  • a trained medical assistant living in her car, hiding from an abusive spouse

  • mentally-ill people who are undiagnosed

Central Florida was reported to have the most long-term homeless people in the nation (2013, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Annual Homeless Assessment Report).
This population includes men, women and in recent years, an increase in homeless children.

Government reports conclude that family homelessness is on the rise in Central Florida (“The Cost of Long-Term Homelessness in Central Florida,” The Central Florida Commission on Homelessness, 2014).
